Our Story
What started as a group of skateboarders searching for a safe place to ride grew into a deeper understanding of how shared spaces can strengthen communities. In 2008, beneath the Kingshighway viaduct in St. Louis, local skaters came together to build a skateboard park - an effort that helped spark the creation of the nonprofit organization KHVT. That project revealed the impact that thoughtfully built spaces could have on people. especially youth, when access and care were prioritized.
Over the following years, Bryan Bedwell was closely involved in community-driven skatepark projects through nonprofit work. Supporting fundraising efforts, construction, and long-term maintenance provided firsthand experience in what it takes to move an idea from grassroots planning to a finished, functioning space. Just as importantly, it showed how professionalism, accountability, and craft could elevate community projects beyond short-term solutions.
One of those efforts was the Peter Mathews Memorial Skate Garden - a project that expanded the definition of what a skatepark could be. In addition to a place to skate, the site includes a community garden maintained by local families and skaters and a small food bank supported through regular donations. Seeing the role these spaces played in the neighborhood reinforced the importance of building environments designed for long-term use and community benefit.
Those experiences ultimately led Bryan to establish Always Hard Concrete as a separate company, grounded in the same values but focused on professional concrete construction. With the support of his daughter, Lily, and a close-knit team of skilled craftsmen, the company was built to bring that level of care, durability, and intention to projects beyond the nonprofit space.
Always Hard Concrete is a grassroots company with a broader vision - applying lessons learned through years of community involvement to professionally built concrete projects across the country. While our roots inform our approach, our work today stands on its own, defined by craftsmanship, accountability, and respect for the communities we serve.
